Breast augmentation by implant is a plastic surgical procedure that aims to increase the size, shape, or fullness of the breast. Thanks to breast augmentation by implant, the patient will be able to remodel her breasts in a way that is adapted to her figure.
Breast augmentation is either performed to enlarge breasts that are naturally small, or restore breast size and shape after pregnancy, weight loss or breastfeeding. The procedure can be considered starting from the age of 18. Breast implants are not the only surgical solution for breast augmentation. The surgeon may also suggest breast lipofilling according to the patient’s medical case and desired outcome.

The choice of implants
During the preliminary consultation, the surgeon will help the patient choose between two types of implants, which vary in form, diameter, and size. The latter choice is based on the patient’s medical case, expectations, and desired outcome.
Breast implants either consist of silicone gel with a textured elastomer surface, or polyurethane foam. The suggested types of breast implants are:
- Round breast implants: round implants make breasts appear fuller, and there is less concern about them rotating out of place.
- Anatomical breast implants: anatomical implants will provide good results for women seeking natural-looking breast enhancement. However, this type of implant is likely to rotate out of place.
During procedure
The procedure is performed under general anaesthesia, and lasts for about an hour.Three types of incisions can be performed during breast enhancement surgery, each of which leave minor post-operational scarring:
- Periareolar incision: it is performed around the nipple.
- Transaxillary incision: it is performed under the armpit.
- Inframammary incision: it is done in the crease under the breast. This type of incision is only considered if the implant size is important.
Once the cut is open, the surgeon proceeds to the insertion of implants. Implants will be placed over or under the pectoral muscle.
- Sub-muscular placement: it is a technique in which breast implants are placed partially under the pectoralis major chest muscle. This technique is considered if the patient has thick glandular tissue.
- Sub-glandular placement: the surgeon places the implant between the breast tissue and the chest muscle. This technique is considered if the patient has thin glandular tissue.
After procedure Breast augmentation
A support bra must be worn during the first three weeks following surgery. A recovery period of five to ten days has to be taken.Physical activity should be avoided for four to six weeks, and can only be resumed upon the surgeon’s approval. Sun exposure of post-operational scars must be avoided during the first months following surgery.
A drainage can be advised by the surgeon to clear out post-surgical liquids.
Results Breast augmentation
Satisfactory results will be visible three to six months after surgery: the breasts are bigger, perkier and have a natural-looking appearance.PREGNANCY & BREASTFEEDING AFTER BREAST AUGMENTATION
Pregnancy after breast augmentation is entirely possible and in many cases does not affect the appearance of the breasts. However, the patient has to avoid getting pregnant for a period of 6 to 12 months after surgery. In addition, breast augmentation does not affect breastfeeding ability.
It is nevertheless important that the patient discuss her pregnancy with the surgeon and be aware of any possible dangers.
