The tools and techniques used in cosmetic surgery have dramatically evolved over the past decades; all meant to meet the aesthetic desires of women all over the world.
However, with the evolution of cosmetic surgery, a new dilemma has emerged; that of choosing the most suitable technique and tools used for one’s surgery. Indeed, for women wishing to undergo breast augmentation surgery, the choice of the technique, the shape of the implants, the scar type, and so on, seem to be an important yet draining task.
Breast augmentation surgery through implantation
Breast implantation is the oldest and most known breast enhancement surgery. It aims to increase the size, shape, or fullness of breasts through the placement of breast implants.
Breast augmentation is either performed to enlarge breasts that are naturally small, or restore breast size and shape after pregnancy, weight loss, breastfeeding, or hormonal imbalance. The procedure can be considered starting from the age of 18.
While women have lost interest in getting breast implants during the past years, medical researchers have sought to reboot the trend by improving the tools, resources and materials of implants. Today, the patient may choose between silicone or saline, smooth or textured, anatomical or round prostheses. She may also choose between a lower, average or high profile implant with a retro-glandular, retro-muscular or dual plan insertion position. The type of the incision is also an option as there are three kinds: periareolar incision, axillary incision, or an incision made in the crease under the breast.
This multitude of options shows the progress made in cosmetic surgery. Indeed, there is an appropriate implant out there for every woman, every skin quality, every age, and every size and shape of breasts. The decision of which implant to choose will be taken in coordination with the surgeon to ensure that the patient select the appropriate implant.
It is important to note that if the size of the breasts are initially small, the size of the chosen implants need to be reasonable (not exceeding 300cc, which is equivalent to 1 cup) in order to achieve natural-looking results. The approach and technique used for the surgery are decided by the doctor.
Lipofilling or breast lipostructure
Breast lipofilling (also known as breast augmentation by lipofilling) is a plastic surgical procedure, which enlarges and reconstructs the breasts by using the patient’s own fat as a permanent filler. The latter is harvested from natural fat deposits like the abdomen, the buttocks, the hips, etc.
Thanks to this procedure, the patient may enjoy naturally bigger breasts, while at the same time slimming another part of their body.
Since breast lipofilling requires extraction of fat from natural fat deposits, a patient who does not have a sufficient fat stock has to undergo breast augmentation by implant placement. The procedure of breast lipofilling is quite new as it was only introduced to the world of cosmetic surgery some thirty years ago.
The combined method
Sometimes, in order to correct a major aesthetic imperfection, or to reconstruct breasts, both procedures can be combined to offer more satisfying results.
