Liposuction is a surgical procedure designed for any person who wishes to remove surplus fat from different areas of their body, such as the abdomen, hips, thighs, buttocks, arms or neck. It is one of the most requested and performed cosmetic surgeries worldwide (after
rhinoplasty and
breast enhancement surgery).
You may be a good candidate for a liposuction if you have too much body fat that failed to respond to diets and physical activities. Surplus fat can be due to different factors, such as: a sedentary lifestyle, unhealthy eating or post-pregnancy.
Liposuction and surplus weight
Liposuction mainly targets surplus fat. However, even in the case of overweight, not all surplus fat will be removed during a liposuction as it plays an important role in the functioning of our metabolism.
Entirely removing surplus fat from an area of the body may also cause serious health and aesthetic issues. It is generally recommended not to exceed 4 liters of surplus fat removal per intervention.
Therefore, the procedure of liposuction should not be taken as a weight-loss method or an overweight treatment, lest it is combined with bariatric surgery. In that case,
baratric surgery may act as a weight-loss treatment, while liposuction is used to optimize the results of the former surgery.
Liposuction and orange-peel skin
Contrary to the general belief, liposuction does not treat skin slackening. Therefore, cellulite located at the level of the fat layers under the skin, can be solely treated with a liposuction. Imperfections caused by cellulite, which give an orange-peel skin aspect, can be corrected with massage treatments, lymphatic drainage, or mesotherapy.
Liposuction and double chin
Liposuction can also correct the double chin by suctioning surplus fat stocked in the chin. If the patient only suffers from a surplus of fat, the surgery will suffice to give them a refined and firm face sculpture.
However, if the patient also suffers from skin slackening, then the liposuction will be combined with a
cervico-facial lift to ensure optimal results. A chin may be also receding, but this imperfection can be only corrected through a
genioplasty.
Liposuction: the durability of results
It is important to know that fatty cells cannot multiply, especially after removal. Therefore, it is very unlikely that removed fat reappears again. However, in order to maintain the results of the procedure, the patient has to make sure that they do not regain weight and adopt a healthy lifestyle of regular exercising and dieting.
